According to the Art Department of Acton Public Schools, visual arts education instructs students in ways to perceive and express the visual, spatial and aesthetic characteristics of the world around them.

The visual arts aid in self-discovery of thoughts, feelings, opinions and emotions.

The visual arts spur growth of creativity in problem solving and assists in a better understanding of individuals, societies and cultures.


The Massachusetts Arts Frameworks Learning Standards for the Visual Arts are:

   1. Knowledge of methods and materials unique to visual arts
   2. Knowledge of the elements and principles of design
   3. Demonstration of the powers of observation, abstraction and invention using
       a variety of media and materials
   4. Knowledge of the process of artistry: drafting, revising, exhibiting
   5. Demonstration of critical response: describing and analyzing one’s own work and
       the work of others using visual arts vocabulary.


Gates Elementary School Visual Arts Program

Each student in kindergarten though sixth grade keeps a visual art portfolio of drawings that documents the student’s progress over the course of his or her elementary school career. The students are given their portfolios to take home upon graduation from sixth grade.

The students at the Gates Elementary School are taught visual art from a cart in their classrooms.  Kindergarten students receive art instruction for thirty minutes per week, and grades one through six receive forty-five minutes of art instruction once a week. Each grade level has exposure to drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, clay and collage.
